Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the definition of a "self-publisher"?
True self-publishing—where the author is in control of every aspect of their publication, from editing to cover art to interior design to printing and binding—is a more reputable alternative to vanity or subsidy press publishing. You have far greater control over the process (which can result in a superior product), and authors retain full ownership of their rights. Authors can function as their own distributors, offering standard discounts and returnability to bookstores, which may make stores more willing to stock a self-published book. Borrego Publishing has a wealth of experience in marketing niche books, and through our unique author-publisher relationship, we can help in that process at a very affordable cost to you.

  • I want to self-publish my book. What are the benefits of using your Self-PublishingPLUSTM program?
Borrego Publishing's Self-PublishingPLUS program is a great resource for those who wish to affordably publish books in small quantities (or large quantities), such as academic textbooks, family histories, employee handbooks, corporate documents, church cookbooks, nonprofit books, niche market books, and self-published books. We can guide you through the process and offer advice on marketing your book. Borrego Publishing is not a subsidy press, as we allow the customer to maintain full rights to their book and we can assist in marketing your niche market book. The books can be printed via Print on Demand (POD), or through traditional print methods. True self-publishing gives authors much greater control over the production and dissemination of their books. And, most importantly, we are affordable.

Self-authors are often vulnerable to opportunists who tell them what they want to hear, but can't really deliver on their promises. Self-publishers often have high expectations for their books, which may not be met in the real world. Pitfalls can develop throughout the publishing process and trip up the unwary author. If you choose Borrego Publishing to publish your book, you will know exactly what you're getting into-there is no hidden agenda.

  • What are the benefits of self-publishing?
Self-publishing works best for niche market nonfiction where the author has direct access to their target audience, or for books whose authors are able to exploit "back-of-the-room" situations (for instance, a restauranteur who can sell his self-published cookbook in his restaurant, or a speaker or lecturer who can offer their books directly to an audience).

  • How can Borrego Publishing help me sell my niche market book?
Borrego Publishing offers a unique author-publisher relationship in that we can offer to market your book by listing it in our bookstore through our websites on the Internet. Through select keywords, we can attract more hits to your page on our website. In addition, we can sell your book in our eBay store, eBay Express and list the books for sale on Amazon. We may also search for user groups with an interest in your particular subject and market the book to them. Ideas are unlimited.

  • Will I be able to get my book on Oprah?
Yes, it’s possible but there are five conditions.
    • First, you have to catch a weasel when it’s asleep.
    • Second, you have to make a silk purse out of a pig’s ear.
    • Third, you must extract sunbeams from cucumbers.
    • Fourth, Elvis Presley must receive a posthumous best actor award for his portrayal of Jess Wade in Charro.
    • And fifth, Mongolia must become the 51st state.
The point: stay realistic. Work hard at marketing day by day. Wasn’t it Edison who said, "Success is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration"?

  • Can my book be included in the Library of Congress Cataloging in Publication (CIP)?
Yes, provided you use Borrego Publishing as your publisher. Only U.S. publishers who publish titles that are most likely to be widely acquired by U.S. libraries are eligible to participate in the CIP program. Book vendors, distributors, printers, production houses and other intermediaries are ineligible. Self-publishers (i.e., authors and editors who pay for or subsidize publication of their own works) and publishers who have published the works of fewer than three different authors are ineligible. Unfortunately, Print on Demand (POD) books are not accepted for CIP). On-demand books are published in small numbers and are seldom widely acquired by the nation's libraries at the time of the initial print run. In those instances when an on-demand title is widely acquired by libraries over a period of time and a series of printings a catalog record is generally available from other libraries or networks such as the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC). Borrego Publishing can apply for CIP data when applicable.

  • What about the Preassigned Control Number (PCN) program?
The Preassigned Control Number (PCN) program assigns a Library of Congress Control Number (a.k.a. Library of Congress Card Number) to titles most likely to be acquired by the Library of Congress as well as some other categories of books. The publisher prints the control number in the book and thereby facilitates cataloging and other book processing activities for libraries and book sellers who obtain copies of the book. An initial bibliographic record is also created for many of these works when the number is assigned. This record is not distributed and is not printed in the book. The CIP program and PCN program are mutually exclusive. Titles processed in one program are not processed in the other program. Borrego Publishing can apply for the PCN number when applicable.

  • Okay, so what's your fee to help me market my book?
We normally ask for a 25% royalty on the books sold through our efforts, based on what the book sells for. For example, say your retail price is $12.00, but the book is sold for $10.00 through a special promotion. Borrego Publishing would retain $2.50, while you would collect $7.50, or 75%. Our nominal fee includes the marketing of your book through various media and, while sometimes we can sell the book for the cover price, sometimes it may be offered at a discount. (Please note that this royalty is separate from the cost you pay to produce and print your book.)

  • I've been looking into publishing my book through a "Vanity" or "Subsidy" press. Are there any pitfalls?

    YES!
Many so-called vanity and subsidy presses exist on the edges of legality. Their written agreements are binding contracts, under law, and you have little or no protection from their terms once you have signed the document.

Subsidy publishing: Once a perfectly legitimate way to publish nonfiction books, today subsidy publishing too often means that you, the author, "subsidize" the production costs, bear all of the high financial risks, and give your profits to the company that accepts your fees (up to 80% of your profits!). They will list your book in their bookstore, but how many people are going to search their bookstore for a niche market book on, for example, the dying art of silver and gold repoussé chasing; or, a book about the oldest cemetery in Prescott, Arizona. Vanity publishing: This is just another way to describe a system that takes your money and guarantees nothing. It is not uncommon to pay a vanity press $5,000 and receive only a handful of books, the "privilege" of buying additional books at a "discount" of 25% to 40%, and a written agreement that strips you of all rights of ownership to the words you have written! You can't even republish your own book.
