Contracting Positions
Full service book production company is looking for experienced Adobe InDesign (CS2 or CS3 preferred) book compositors/layout artists for contract and freelance projects. Must be detail-oriented, motivated, have a positive, "can do" attitude and be able to meet tight deadlines. Book-length or textbook (250+ pages) and press file preparation experience a must. All work to be done off-site. Prefer the use of Windows platform. Please do not apply if you are a beginning user of InDesign, or do not have long document experience.

A while back I was looking for a good layout artist and placed and advertisement in Craig's List. I preferred a person that worked with the Windows platform and said so in the ad. Before you read this, note that I have been using a Windows system to publish or produce my books for some of the largest book companies (with no problems). Read on...

BIG mistake not using a Mac platform. You will save time, money and aggravation using a system that is stable, impervious to viruses, professional and elegant. Seriously, I am amazed ANYONE would attempt to use a PC machine for layout or design (read: amature). And you are eliminating the most talented professionals (who all use Macs) by only using *shudder* PCs. And have you thought about complications with your service bureau when you go to get your book printed? I used to work at one, and every time PC files came through, our production staff would groan b/c EVERY SINGLE PC file had major complications. You work on sub-par equipment, request sub-par help, you will get sub-par results. Next time you need to invest in equipment, buy the right equipment. You can thank me later.
